We're Only Days Away from the 2008 PGE/SOLV Starlight Parade!

Saturday, May 31, 2008
8:30 p.m.
Downtown Portland

The Portland Rose Festival's Starlight Parade is proudly illuminated to fill the night with shining lights, along with music, fun and frolic! It remains one of our most popular events, and along with our other two parades shares the title of 'The Cleanest Parade in America,' thanks to the efforts of our sponsors, Portland General Electric and SOLV, and many amazing volunteers! The parade is broadcast live from 9:00 - 11:00 p.m. on KGW NewsChannel 8, so if you can't come out to join us, be sure to tune in your TV!

There's still time for YOU to volunteer with the clean-up effort! Visit our VOLUNTEER PAGE for more information.

This Year the PGE/SOLV Starlight Parade is Proud to Present Three Special Parade Sections!

Community Pride
presented by Wells Fargo: This section features entries that celebrate everything that's great about our communities, including the Wells Fargo Stagecoach (which is a replica of the original stagecoach that traversed the country back when Oregon was only a territory). This section also has entries from Self Enhancement Inc., the United Way and Oregon 4-H.

International Section
presented by Mexicana Airlines: This section captures the international flavor of Portland's diverse community, with entries that represent cultures from across the globe. These include the lively folks from the Festa Italiana Association, the Portland-Kaohsiung Dragon Boat team and Kell's Irish Pipe Band.

Spirit of the West
presented by Spirit Mountain Casino: This revives a section originally featured in the very first Portland Rose Festival, where 20 floats represented communities throughout the West. This 2008 Spirit of the West section celebrates Oregon's thriving cities, communities and festivals, with entries from the Molalla Buckaroo Rodeo, the City of West Linn, the Astoria Regatta Festival and more.

And don't forget the...

KeyBank Starlight Run

Runners will dash down the route directly prior to the Starlight Parade!

Cleanest & Greenest Festival Welcomes EPA Ocean Survey Vessel OSV Bold

In Portland for a week-long visit is The Bold, EPA Ocean Survey Vessel OSV Bold, on her first-ever assignment to the West Coast. Her job is to monitor and assess the health of our oceans and coastal waters, clearly right in line with the Mission Statement of the Rose Festival!

The Rose Festival is proud of our 'Cleanest & Greenest' festival in the world title.

The Ocean Survey Vessel Bold (The Bold) is EPA's only ocean and coastal monitoring vessel. The Bold -- a converted U.S. Navy T-AGOS class vessel -- is equipped with state-of-the-art sampling, mapping, and analysis equipment including sidescan sonar, underwater video, water sampling instruments, and sediment sampling devices, which scientists can use in various monitoring activities. EPA recognizes that accurate and timely data collection and analysis along our coasts will help us take actions necessary to keep our nation’s coastal and ocean waters healthy.

Meet Nels 'Swede' Edlund, a member of the Royal Rosarians (who are great friends and partners of the Portland Rose Festival Foundation).

Swede is the Float Inspector of the Grand Floral Parade, a title he's held for 25 years straight.

It's Swede's job to review the engines, check over the chassis, gather the insurance and just generally make sure all the floats will be up and running on parade day!

The above photo shows Swede this past Memorial Day over at the Studio Concepts warehouse, where he helped with Float Maneuverability, an annual event.

The PRFF wants to offer Swede a big THANK YOU for everything he's done these many years!
