See You at the Grand Floral Parade!
The feature event of the Portland Rose Festival is the KeyBank Grand Floral Parade, the single largest one-day event in the Pacific Northwest. It features lovely all-floral floats, the stirring sounds of marching bands, exciting prancing equestrian units and so many other interesting entries, like the llamas and dignitaries!
This year visiting Navy Ship The USS Preble is providing a parade Color Guard, and internationally famous Michael Curry is showcasing several of his puppets!
For the first time ever, the KeyBank Grand Floral Parade will be broadcast in HD, generously funded by Spirit Mountain Casino and Fred Meyer! The Parade will be televised Live, Saturday, June 7 at 10:00 a.m. on KGW NewsChannel 8 and Northwest Cable News, then rebroadcast on both channels on Sunday, June 8 and Tuesday, June 10 at 7:00 p.m.
For 2008, the Rose Festival theme is 'Romancing the Rose' -- and the Grand Floral Parade is embracing and celebrating that theme with three special sections that feature various facets of romance: Passion & Patriotism, Frolic & Flirtation presented by University of Oregon and International Enchantment presented by The Boeing Company.
Another exciting new feature of this year's parade is the first-ever Character Clown Corps! View local citizens who have joined up to learn how to be clowns, under the expert tutelage of Angel Ocasio, as they march with their very own Teddy Bear Clown float! The Character Clown Corps has been featured in more than one segment of "Out and About" with Drew Carney, and has already made several appearances on behalf of the festival, including a visit to City Hall!
Below we see some of the Clowns posing with the 2008 Rose Festival Court at Portland City Hall!
Meet Stacey Flintjer, the Equestrian Chairman of the Grand Floral Parade!
2008 marks Stacey's eighth year serving in this important role, where she manages each and every horse-related entry, spending countless hours before and after the parade to make sure things run smoothly.
In fact, Stacey was selected as the Rose Festival's Volunteer of the Year back in 2004!
Stacey has actually ridden in the parade eight times -- and will be riding for the ninth time this year, at the invitation of Pedro Munoz-Sanchez and Rancho Tres Potrillos (also known as Three Colts Ranch)!
The PRFF wants to take this opportunity to THANK Stacey for all the work she does!
Enjoy Public Parade Access
For 2008, parade attendees are encouraged to celebrate equal parade access for all, by reserving your spot in person along the parade route, beginning Friday morning,
Those who wish to can camp along the parade route beginning Friday night, June 6. And we have loads of fun ideas for ways you can use duct tape this year to make creative items (like duct tape roses!), in place of taping off sidewalks and streets.
Bring along your chalk for games and street art that everyone can share, but please don't use it to save places.
For the First Time Ever, Portable Toilets Grace the Parade Route!
A total of 313 portable toilets will be lined up along the parade route for spectator use! (You can see the map by clicking the 'learn more' link below.)
