GFP Grand Marshal for 2011? Go Ducks!

March 18, 2011

The Oregon Ducks Football Team will serve as Grand Marshal for this year's Spirit Mountain Casino Grand Floral Parade. President Sue Bunday and CEO Jeff Curtis made the announcement in Eugene today, greeting University of Oregon President Richard Lariviere and Athletic Director Rob Mullens -- as well as presenting roses to the Duck himself!

"Both our organizations have been working for a hundred years to bring positive recognition to Oregon," says Sue Bunday, 2011 Portland Rose Festival Foundation President. "People are going to be so excited to see the team riding down the parade route on the University of Oregon float. We expect the Ducks to hear fans yelling 'O' for the entire 4.2-mile trip."

Parade-watchers can expect a spirited presence from UO. Fans and alumni looking for ways to show their support have several options. Tickets for a special Oregon Duck section of parade seats in camera view just outside Veterans Memorial Coliseum are on sale now through this website using the special promo code QUACK. UO fans can also sport their colors during the Regence Grand Floral Walk, which steps off just ahead of the parade at 9:30 a.m. (Walk registration opens April 1.)

"What an honor to have the support and acknowledgement from the Portland Rose Festival," said UO President Richard Lariviere. "Our football team proudly represented the university and the state of Oregon at the national championship game, the pinnacle of collegiate athletics. To serve as the Grand Marshal of an event with so much Oregon history is a great way to celebrate the team and entire university."

As Oregon's flagship university, the University of Oregon is one of only two institutions in the Northwest with membership in the prestigious 63-member Association of American Universities, consistently ranking among the best in the country when it comes to teaching and research. The UO also is among the 108 institutions chosen from 4,633 U.S. universities for top-tier designation of 'Very High Research Activity' in the 2010 Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education.

The university offers nearly 300 undergraduate majors, including 18 languages and everything from marine biology to product design. UO students go beyond the classroom to take advantage of hands-on learning opportunities in the state-including facilities in Portland and the Oregon coast.

The 2011 Spirit Mountain Casino Grand Floral Parade is on Saturday, June 11, following the Queen's Coronation presented by Pacific Power and the Regence Grand Floral Walk. Tickets for indoor and outdoor seating at Veterans Memorial Coliseum are on sale now.
