Portland Icon, Darcelle, Will Shine in Starlight Parade Joined By Portlandia Stars

April 22, 2011

The Rose Festival made a special appearance at Darcelle XV Showcase to announce that Darcelle -- one of Portland's most recognized citizens (and a true Portland Icon), will be the Grand Marshal for the 2011 Portland General Electric/SOLV Starlight Parade (Saturday June 4 at 8:30 p.m.).

"I've had a 44-year career as an entertainer," said Walter Cole (also known as Darcelle XV). "Before this I thought the highlight was singing with the Oregon Symphony, but the Rose Festival asking me to be the Grand Marshal of the Starlight Parade is absolutely top drawer."

Darcelle has received numerous honors over the years for charitable contributions and fundraising support including keys to the City of Linnton for helping save their community center, the Ellen Summers Award for Lifetime Achievement from the Northwest Gender Alliance and a special "Spirit of Portland" award presented by then Mayor Vera Katz for nearly 40 years of service to the City of Roses.

Parade fans can look forward to a uniquely Portland section paying homage to Portlandia including a couple of special guests, Fred and Carrie, from the acclaimed new TV series. To wrap up the evening a never seen before flash mob will surprise parade viewers at different locations. All together 20 bands, 21 special units, over 20 marching groups and more than 50 community floats will roll through downtown Portland.

The PGE/SOLV Starlight Parade is broadcast live in high definition to local and regional viewers on KGW NewsChannel 8, beginning at 9:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 4, 2011.
