Rose Festival Outperforms Phelps
September 17, 2008
America had something to celebrate when swimmer Michael Phelps came home from the Beijing Olympics with eight gold medals. Now Portlanders can be equally proud of the festival that bears its name: The Portland Rose Festival! For the second year in a row the Rose Festival won nine Gold Pinnacle Awards —- the Academy Award for festivals and events -— at the annual International Festivals & Events Association conference September 12.
Happily, our website was awarded a Silver award. And our eNewsletter (which you can sign up to receive HERE) took a Gold.
For the first time ever -- and as a sterling testament to the Portland Rose Festival Foundation's mission -- the Rose Festival proudly swept the Educational category, winning Gold for Jurassic Journey (the WaMu Waterfront Village's 2008 feature attraction), the inaugural Character Clown Corps took the Silver, and the popular Living History curriculum (which served more than 800 area grade school students) brought home the Bronze.
Continuing its trend as one of the Greenest Festivals in the world, the Rose Festival won Silver for Best Environmental Program. (In a photo finish, the hard charging Kentucky Derby Festival nosed out Portland for the Gold.)
Wining the second highest amount of awards in festival history, the Portland Rose Festival brought back a total 24 awards. (The Rose Festival won the Grand Pinnacle as the Best Festival in the World for its Centennial Celebration in 2007.)
