World Environment Day RoZone Rally

On June 5 -- the official date of World Environment Day -- a special rally will be held in the Rose Festival's entertainment venue, the RoZone. This part of Tom McCall Waterfront Park will be filled with fun, educational activities for children of all ages--all free to the public. Activities include story-telling, mask-making, fly casting and fly tying, trash art and the chance to be part of the Procession of the Species, a mini-parade around the waterfront featuring folks dressed as their favorite animals, led by Joy Now performers and stilt-walkers. Plus rides on the Big Wheel will be FREE on World Environment Day!

The Rose Festival is proud to partner with the City of Portland to celebrate this one-of-a-kind distinction from UNEP. As Portland's Official Festival, the Rose Festival annually attracts two million people at its many events and programs.

Portland's World Environment Day celebration is a confluence of events and cultures, the perfect representation of the diversity of peoples and ideas that resonate within the Rose City.

From native traditions that taught respect for the land to today's strategies and technologies for preserving and restoring the ecosystem, Portland has always been at the forefront of environmental responsibility. This year the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has recognized Portland's leadership by naming the city the North American host for World Environment Day.

The City of Portland has invited all environmental and sustainability groups to be part of the overall celebration by scheduling events during the six weeks between Earth Day on April 22 and the week of World Environment Day, which officially falls on June 5, 2013. These events are listed at the City's World Environment Day WEBSITE.

World Environment Day was established by the General Assembly in 1972, and more than 130 countries celebrate each year.

Like Portland, Rose Festival has a long history of valuing the environment; for the past 14 years, the International Festivals & Events Association has recognized the Rose Festival as the "Cleanest and Greenest Festival in America."

Several Rose Festival events, like the Junior Parade and the Grand Floral Walk, will feature special sections highlighting the natural environment.

Featured participants include the City of Portland Bureau of Environmental Services, the Intertwine, Radio Disney's Team Green, SOLVE, NOAA and the Pacific NW College of Art.
